While there are several performers on today’s music scene, few carry the burden of following in the footsteps of one of music’s greatest vocalists. Roy Hamilton Jr., son of the Legendary “Golden Boy of Song” Roy Hamilton, who recorded such hit songs as “You’ll Never Walk Alone” “Unchained Melody”, “Ebb Tide”, and “Don’t Let Go”, has committed himself to preserving the legacy of his legendary father. Blessed with the drive and ambition that is ingrained within all-stars, as well as the melodic, soaring tenor voice left to him by his father, he fills those big shoes with ease.
Born September 9th, 1961 in New York City, it seems Roy was born to sing. In his early years, he began to do just that, performing with his father at various events, including for the Prime Minister of the Bahamas and his wife at the Nassau Beach Hotel, as early as 7 years old.
In 1976 Roy, along with his brother Ray and his mother Myrna, recorded a Tribute Album to his great father, entitled “The Hamilton Affair for Roy”. The Group performed at various radio sponsored events in, New York and the Bahamas to promote the album, including a “Thank You Miami” concert at the Carver Theater in Miami, Florida.
He became a mainstay at clubs and casinos in Atlantic City such as The Claridge, Trump Castle, Resorts, The Wonder Gardens, The Blue Light and Viva’s Lounge. He also performed at various events, including The Black History Museum’s Annual Program, the annual Kwanzaa Festival (which also starred Roy Ayers), and had a role in the Musical “Rise 11” at the Showboat Casino.
In 1978, Roy found his second great love, Maria Wilson, and the two were married a year later. The marriage produced 3 beautiful children, Roy III, Thomas and Raphael Hamilton and has been going strong ever since. In 1998, Roy moved to legendary Motown with his Band “The Golden Boys”. They performed at various venues all over the state, including restaurants such as Fish Bones, Baker’s Keyboard Lounge, and the Historic Fox and Hounds, where he performed regularly for nine months. During this time Roy also hosted a Show along with his wife Maria, on WPON Radio. It was a tribute to his legendary father entitled “The Golden Boy Hour: Roy Hamilton Remembered”. He performed at the station’s yearly events, such as The Gratiot Cruise and The Woodward Car Cruise, both held on Detroit’s State Fair Grounds.
Between 2000 and 2004, Roy took his show back to Atlantic City, performing regularly at various clubs such as Club Alfonso’s with the Golden Boys and at the Ozone in the Renaissance Hotel. He was also featured at several events such as the Garden Basin Festival, the Boardwalk Jazz Series, and hosted a Roy Hamilton Father’s Day Tribute at The Kennedy Plaza. In 2005, Roy hit the road again, this time taking his show to Las Vegas. He performed at several casinos, such as the Montelago, Stratosphere and the Sahara. He Headlined his own Show with his band at the Bootlegger Bistro and LVH. He also made several guest appearances on the Dennis Bono Radio Show at (SouthPoint Hotel and Casino), Ed Mathew’s Variety Shows held at Sam’s Town & Suncoast Hotel and Casinos.
Roy found himself in good company when featured, along with the offspring of other legendary musicians in “The Next Generation”, an event hosted by “The Cast” at The Italian American Club. His show at “the Hawaiian Market Place” in 2008 brought rave reviews located on the famous Las Vegas Strip. Through the years, Roy continued performing shows all over the country with a singular purpose: To ensure that the legacy of his father is never forgotten.
He made several appearances Hosting, Performing and Headlining His Own Show called “The Legacy Continues” at venues including Ron DeCar’s Event Center and on “Sherry Gordy Presents” Shows in The Club Tequila at The Fiesta Rancho Hotel & Casino. He recorded several original songs which includes, “One Thousand Ways” and “Butterfly” which are available on iTunes and ALL Streaming Platforms.
In addition, Roy made a Cameo in The Movie “Standing Ovation” and had a significant Interview in the Recently released Documentary about Elvis by The BBC called “The Rebirth of The King”, reflecting on the Major Influence his Dad, Roy Hamilton “The Golden Boy” had on Elvis’s Musical Career. He also Performed at several Venues and Events in Toronto, Canada and appeared in Commercials.
Roy Jr is also the Headmaster at The Roy Hamilton School of Voice where he teaches Vocal Coaching and is on the Board of Advisors at The Singers Company, which is Owned and Operated by his Son, Producer/Songwriter Roy Hamilton III.
